You talk about reading things into the Bible. I can relate to that. I took a Bible as Literature course at a secular college. Reading the Bible on its own terms instead of reading pre-digested beliefs into it opened it up to me for the first time. How can fundamentalism claim to be “Bible based” if the Bible can’t be read on its own terms? As fundamentalist children grow to maturity they are faced with either evolving in their understanding or building a fortress around belief systems that don’t stand up to scrutiny.
